Abstract:
Mine locations and attributes from the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) Abandoned and Inactive Mines database. This data was compiled by MBMG using the U.S. Bureau of Mines MILS database as a basis. The information was updated during the USDA Forest Service (Region 1) and U.S. Bureau of Land Management mine inventory (conducted from 1992 to 2002). The coordinates and legal descriptions come from sources of varying accuracy. The attributes included here are a subset of those available from the MBMG database.
Purpose:
Identification of mine sites, locations, and attributes compiling past data with current research results. Emphasis is on those sites that have potential environmental effects on USFS-administered land.

Time period of content:
Beginning date: 1974
Ending date: 2005
Currentness reference: Publication Date
Status:
Progress: Complete
Maintenance and update frequency:
Updated as information is corrected and new information is incorporated, dependent on funding.
Access constraints: None
Use constraints:
This database relies heavily on the preceeding information from the U.S. Bureau of Mines MILS database. Locations are point data representing a larger area and are somewhat interpretive. Names of mine sites may change over time with differing owners.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute accuracy report:
Information reflects the accuracy of the original data for the sites that were not visited. Information on the sites visited have a higher degree of accuracy and the data is current for the time of the inventory. Numerical qualifiers are not available for accuracy for each site.

Completeness report:
The sites in the MBMG Abandoned and Inactive Mines database do not represent the locations of all the mines in Montana. The list is a compilation of mines noted in literature, in unpublished files at the MBMG, from personal knowledge, and from locations found during the field inventory. One site may represent multiple mine openings within a single ore deposit. Other sites may have never had any excavations associated with them. The MBMG database may represent the most complete list of mine sites in Montana; sites on or affecting US Forest Service land have the most complete records and were the focus of this inventory.

The OPTYPE, STATUS, and COM fields are blank for mines that were not in the U.S. Bureau of Mines MILS database.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
For sites that were visited, the accuracy represents confirmed locations using either GPS locations or by plotting the location on a paper copy 7.5-min quadrangle. For sites not visited but inventoried by MBMG, the accuracy varies but is confirmed by a literature description or by personal knowledge. Sites with locations from MILS have an accuracy of the original source which range from +/-5km to +/-10m depending on the accuracy of the description in the citation. These sites have unconfirmed locations.

Process step:
MBMG imported selected fields from the U.S. Bureau of Mines MILS database as an original data source. MBMG staff then researched the mine localities that had the potential to impact USFS and USBLM federal lands, first by literature searches that screened out sites with little or no impacts to federal lands. Field visits gathered information on land ownership, site features and environmental problems for those sites with the potential to impact USFS- and USBLM-administered lands.
Process date: 2002
Process step:
The MBMG made corrections to the database and added approximately 20 additional sites.
